Vision and Goals

Project Vision

Sustainability means something different to each person and each community. The District’s Neighborhood Sustainability Indicators Pilot Project (NSIPP) is an opportunity for residents to define sustainability in a way that is meaningful to them and their neighborhoods. Once a community defines sustainability and creates a vision for itself, then it can set goals and objectives to reach that vision. In turn, neighborhood sustainability indicators can be identified to track the community’s progress towards reaching its goals and its overall vision.

Project Goals

  • Recruit citizens for a participatory process to define neighborhood sustainability and identify related goals.
  • Create a list of neighborhood sustainability indicators that are understandable by a broad audience, relevant to local residents and issues, and practical for policymakers.
  • Develop targets for each indicator and a monitoring system to help the Office of Planning or a third party keep track of the indicators.
  • Foster a broad understanding and commitment among residents about sustainability goals and energize residents and civic groups on achieving the goals.
  • Produce a feasible implementation plan to support homeowners and private businesses move their neighborhood closer to its sustainability goals.
